Perception of Undergraduate Students towards Waste Disposal: A Case Study of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria

Abstract
The study investigated undergraduate students’ attitude towards waste disposal in Obafemi Awolowo University community. It also investigated their perception of the operational system of waste disposal and finally investigated their level of awareness of waste management. This was with a view to suggesting measures that could be employed in developing positive waste disposal attitude in order to enhance a conducive environment free from diseases. A survey research design was adopted for the study. Two hundred and seventy-seven (277) undergraduates constituted the sample size. Three research questions were raised and answered. Data collected were analysed, using frequency count and percentages. The results, among others, revealed that 238 (86%) of the respondents had poor waste disposal attitude while 39 (14%) displayed good waste disposal attitude. Also, 259 (94%) of the respondents positively appraised the current system of waste disposal all around the university community while 18 (6%) faulted the system. The result finally revealed that 82 (30%), 134 (48%) and 61 (22%) of the respondents were highly; averagely and fairly informed about waste management respectively. The study concluded that students’ attitude towards waste disposal is poor.
