Abstract
The effects of extracts of aqueous extracts of Carica papaya and Chromolaena odorata extracted at different concentration of 1, 3 and 4% on Fusarium lateritium were evaluated in the present study. The study was conducted at the Mycology Laboratory of the Department of Crop Production and Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Pure culture of F. lateritium was isolated from tomato leaves showing Fusarium wilt symptoms and was identified morphologically. Two ml of the different extracts of C. papaya and C. odorata at different concentrations both in single and combined form was introduced to the different plates containing the PDA and mixed gently. The study consisted of ten different treatments of botanicals in triplicates arranged in complete randomized design (CRD). The diameter of the colony (cm) was measured using a meter rule. Fungal toxicity test on extracts was calculated in terms of percentage growth inhibition (PGI).The least PGI of 7.5% was observed on the control plate while the highest PGI(81%) was observed on F.lateritium plate amended with combined aqueous botanical extracts C. papaya + C. odorata at 4% concentration. The study concluded that combined aqueous extracts of C. papaya and C. odorata are capable of inhibiting the mycelia growth of F. lateritium.
