Abstract

Oryzias is a genus of rice fish and worldwide popular for the interest of using this fishes as an experimental model organism in various biochemical studies. This genus is commonly associated with mangrove and estuarine habitats of south East Asia. Oryzias javanicus is one of the 34 species, that comes under this genus is henceforth reported from Andaman Nicobar group of islands as well as from Indian island ecosystem for the first time from this communication. The species was collected from the estuarine creek of Great Nicobar during faunal survey to record the aquatic faunal diversity of the island. Details of the morphological data, live coloration and wild habitat details are recorded for the new record. Present finding opens a new array for recording Oryzias diversity from Indian region.
